The Tao of Leadership
John Heider
This has long been one of my all time favourite books on leadership. A million miles away from dry theory and endless checklists, it is more like a volume of leadership poetry, full of powerful metaphors. As well as individual reflective material there is also much wisdom for anyone who leads groups and teams such as the following:
'The well-run group is not a battlefield of egos… The wise leader knows that it is far more important to be content with what is actually happening than to get upset over what might be happening but isn’t.'

First Among Equals
Patrick McKenna & David Maister

I bought this book because many of my coaching clients aren’t line managers in the traditional sense. They are often the functional head of a group of articulate, highly skilled independent professionals who don’t take too kindly to being closely managed. A series of clear, practical checklists aimed directly at managers and leaders. It is divided into sections with headings such as Getting Ready, Coaching Individuals, Coaching the Team and Building For the Future. An excellent everyday guide book for both new and experienced leaders of professional groups. Read it and learn how to get the best from even your most challenging colleagues!

Managing Transitions
William Bridges
A book I often recommend to my clients and have used myself at crossroads moments. An excellent resource for helping us cope creatively with the critical changes in our lives. Bridges identifies three stages of transition - endings, the neutral zone and new beginings. Includes personal reflective methods and advice applicable to both individuals and organisations.

Non-Violent Communication

How many times do we wish we had the skills to communicate more effectively especially where there could be conflict? Several of my clients have found this book extremely helpful as it offers a profound and practical approach to communicating with both ourselves and others with greater clarity and understanding. For those who are familiar with the basics of type, this book can both accelerate and deepen your psychological and spiritual journey. Packed with simple, practical guidelines on the model and then a series of exercises to aid awakening for each of the types, it offers a clear path for personal and spiritual evolution. Nine Ways of Working
Michael J. Goldberg
A very useful Enneagram book aimed at business leaders and for those who are less comfortable with spiritual language. Suitable for beginners and those who want to understand what drives themselves, their colleagues and clients. Some great case studies of real life leaders, their strengths, weaknesses and challenges from an Enneagram perspective. Also some specific personal development suggestions and tips on how to handle other types most effectively.

The Power of Now
Eckhart Tolle
If you are seriously interested in developing greater presence and more lasting peace and happiness, this is modern classic. It compliments well the work of Riso and Hudson in their Enneagram trainings and offers many practical ideas which are spiritual but non-denominational. A simple yet profound message whose meaning deepens as we go further along our development path.

Wherever You Go, There You Are
Jon Kabat-Zinn
A very clear and entertaining description of what it means to be more mindful and present in our everyday life. Rather then going into a monastery or withdrawing from the world, this book is about how incorporating meditation techniques on a regular basis can help you enjoy life more fully. Will appeal to both beginning meditators and long-time practitioners. He reminds us very powerfully that awakening is no further from us than this very moment we are in. Full of simple practices you can try out at any time.

Spiritual Intelligence: The Ultimate Intelligence
Danah Zohar & Ian Marshall
After all the hundreds of books and articles about IQ and EQ, there seems to be enough collective evidence from psychology, neurology, anthropology and cognitive science to suggest that there is a third Q in the form of SQ or spiritual intelligence. SQ is what we use to develop our capacity for meaning, vision and value. Covering both the scientific evidence for SQ based on recent brain research and ways to assess and develop your own SQ, this is both an inspiring and practical read.

What Really Matters
Tony Schwartz
What is a truly meaningful and complete life and who can show me how to live it?

Armed with these two questions, Tony Schwartz began a fascinating Cook's Tour of America's leading psychologists, mystics, philosophers, psychics and scientists. This book filled a lot of the (many) gaps in my knowledge about the leading spiritual thinkers of our age. I particularly enjoyed learning about Ram Dass' and Timothy Leary's run ins with Harvard, the pioneers of the Esalen Foundation and Maslow's troubled childhood. The chapter on Al Almaas and Helen Palmer added to my Enneagram education.
